Maximizing Psychosocial InterventionsSTAR, Inc., 208 Church St., Decatur, GA 30030.
Although many patients with schizophrenia benefit from pharmacologic treatment, a patient's quality of life cannot be improved through drug therapy alone. Pharmacologic treatment must be integrated with psychosocial interventions to achieve the greatest level of recovery and prevent relapse. Patient outcomes can be maximized by drawing on the skills of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of a psychiatrist, nurse, psychologist, social worker, and pharmacist, among others. Through the team approach, the patient benefits from the full range of therapeutic options offered by each team member. The active participation of the patient's family members in the treatment program cannot be overlooked. Family members can be instrumental in helping the patient reintegrate into society.
