New York University, College of Nursing, New York Elder neglect (EN), one of the most prevalent forms of elder mistreatment, has clear mental health implications that may play a crucial role in the detection and intervention of EN. Increased awareness of the clinical and psychological manifestations of EN, as well as understanding recommended assessment and interventional strategies, may help psychiatric nurses who may be on the frontline of EN identification prevent the escalation of neglect into more severe cases of elder abuse.
