The Neurobiology of SchizophreniaTurning Point Center, One Sansome St., Suite 2100, San Francisco, CA 94104. Research into the neurobiology of schizophrenia has led to advances in the drug treatment of this devastating illness. Through imaging studies, drug models of psychoses, and other research techniques, possible anatomic abnormalities and neurotransmitter changes in the brains of individuals with schizophrenia have been identified. By developing drugs that selectively antagonize dopamine, serotonin, and other neurotransmitter receptors, it is possible to effectively control the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and decrease the incidence of drug-related side effects. In addition, by understanding the neuropathology and related cognitive deficits, psychiatric nurses will be able to develop more effective interventions to assist patients and their families.
