Postdischarge Social Contact: A Potential Area for Boundary Violation

Ruth Gallop, RN, PhD

University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

There has been an increasing body of literature on the topic of sexual exploitation of clients by health care professionals, including nurses. Less has been written about other forms of potential boundary violations such as postdischarge social contact. With the use of a case study, this article will consider the potential risks for boundary violation that can occur with postdischarge social contact. As background to the case study, a brief review will consider the response of professional associations to sexual exploita tion and the meaning of professional role and professional boundaries.
