Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated With Streptococcal Infection: Overview and Nursing ImplicationsUniversity of Virginia School of Nursing in Charlottesville
University of Virginia School of Nursing Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection are a new diagnostic classification that is applied to children or adolescents in whom tic disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorder develop and are repeatedly exacerbated after group A ß-hemolytic streptococcal infections. Research indicates that this classification may be an autoimmune disorder that affects the basal ganglia in much the same manner as Sydenhams chorea. In this review of the literature, a description of this "new" construct is presented, with the hypothesized etiology, diagnostic criteria, treatment, and nursing considerations for this pediatric phenomenon outlined.
