Wisconsin’s prescriptive authority for advanced practice nurses went into effect April 1, 1995. Initiating prescriptive practice into the largest mental health division in the state presented some unique obstacles, including diverse preparation in psychopharmacology among advanced practice nurses, the political climate of the institution, and risk management concerns. This article discusses how addressing these issues led to the establishment of a community standard for advanced practice psychiatric nurse prescribers.
